Key words: assistant professor, animal models of neurodegenerative disorders, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, molecular biology.

Current research program of the Department of Cellular Signalling.

Research at the Department of Cellular Signalling focuses on the processes responsible for the development of neurological diseases resulting from synapses dysfunction - synaptopathies, such as autism as well as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disorders. The main research interest concentrate on the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial failure, inflammatory processes and oxidative stress that could trigger synapses impairment contributing to neuronal dysfunction. We study the toxic effects of misfolded and covalently modified proteins such as amyloid beta peptides (Aβ) and alpha-synuclein (α-syn) on synaptic function. Our mission is to understand the pathogenesis of autism and neurodegenerative diseases and subsequently to identify new disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets for an earlier diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from different diseases of the nervous system. In our studies we use both in vitro and in vivo models (e.g. murine model of Alzheimer’s disease – intracerebroventricular administration of oligomeric Aβ; murine model of Parkinson’s disease – intracerebroventricular administration of α-synuclein; rat model of neurodevelopmental diseases in offspring – prenatal exposition to maternal immune activation (MIA), animal models of systemic inflammation, murine model of tuberous sclerosis complex; TSC).

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate.

To study the importance of prenatal activation of the immune system and the systemic inflammatory response in the pathomechanism of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In particular, elucidate the molecular mechanisms leading to disturbances in the structure and function of synapses and synaptic mitochondria in animal models of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. Molecular and biochemical studies using animal models (mice, rats) of prenatal activation of the immune system by intraperitoneal administration of a TLR family receptor activators, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C). Explaining the importance of mTOR-dependent signalling in synaptic dysfunction using the murine model of tuberous sclerosis (TSC). Behavioural research with the use of tests assessing behaviours typical for autism spectrum disorders as well as used to measure cognitive ability. The aim of the research is to understand the relationship between the activation of the maternal immune system and the function and plasticity of synapses in the offspring's brain.
